The Door Is Not Heavy. It Is Unsupported.
A torsion spring is a steel bar under permanent load, and when it snaps it releases that load in one moment. That is the bang people hear from inside the house, often described as sounding like a gunshot or a car backfiring. Afterwards the door behaves in ways that are easy to recognize. It will not lift when the opener runs, or it rises a few inches and stops, or the opener strains and hums without moving anything. Try to lift it by hand and it feels impossibly heavy, because the spring that was supposed to make it feel weightless is now in two pieces resting on the shaft. Sometimes the door is already partway open, which is worse: it is now an unsupported weight hanging above the floor. In that state the door should not be operated, and nobody should walk under it.
The repair itself is straightforward for a trained technician, and genuinely dangerous for anyone else. Before any spring is touched, the door has to be secured, the opener disconnected, and the remaining tension released in a controlled way using proper winding bars. Once the load is off, the springs are removed, the drums, cables, center bearing and end plates are inspected, and new springs of the correct wire size and cycle rating are fitted. We replace them as a pair, because the surviving spring has the same age and the same number of cycles and will typically follow within weeks. Tension is then set to the right number of turns, the door is balanced so it holds position at mid-travel, and the travel limits on the opener are reset. Homes near the coast in Hollywood and Hallandale Beach often have springs that have corroded as well as fatigued, which is one more reason we check the whole torsion assembly while it is open.
Safe, Level, Tested
Your door is secured and the tension properly released before any spring work begins — no shortcuts with that part of the job. Springs go on as a matched pair, the door is rebalanced and cycled several times, and the opener travel is reset before we leave.
Why This Works Better
Matched-Pair Springs
Both springs are replaced with the same wire size and rating, so the door lifts evenly and you are not back on the phone in a month.
Controlled Tension Release
Winding bars, door secured, opener released first. Handled properly, this is routine. Handled badly, it is the most dangerous job in the garage.
Emergency Priority
A door stuck open or a car trapped inside is treated as urgent, and we answer the phone at any hour including nights, weekends and holidays.
Three Steps Start to Finish
Call and Stay Clear
Keep everyone away from the door and do not run the opener. Tell us whether the door is up, down or partway, and whether a car is trapped.
Secure and Inspect
We secure the door, release the remaining tension with proper tools and inspect the springs, drums, cables, bearing plate and end plates.
Replace, Balance, Reset
New matched springs are fitted and wound to the correct tension, the door is balanced and cycled, and the opener travel limits are reset and tested.
Broken Spring Replacement in the Field
Broken Spring Replacement FAQs
I heard a loud bang in the garage. Should I open the door?
No. Do not run the opener and do not pull the manual release cord — with a broken spring the door has no support and can come down hard. Keep people and pets clear and call (786) 671-4001.
The door is stuck halfway open. Is that dangerous?
Yes, treat it as urgent. A door held up with a broken spring is an unsupported weight over your car and anyone walking underneath. Leave it exactly as it is and call us — this is the kind of call we dispatch any hour.
Why replace both springs if only one broke?
Both springs have the same age, the same cycle count and the same exposure to coastal humidity. When one goes, the other is usually close behind, and running a new spring against a tired one leaves the door unbalanced. Call (786) 671-4001 and we will replace both in the same visit.
How long will the new springs last?
Life is measured in cycles, not years. Springs are rated for a number of open and close cycles, and how long that takes depends on how often your household uses the door. We fit the rating that suits your door and usage.
Can I buy a spring and fit it myself?
We strongly advise against it. The torsion bar stores enough energy to cause serious injury, and the winding procedure needs the correct bars and technique. This is one repair worth paying a professional to do.
